Incredible results for Future Problem Solvers at Melbourne Nationals!

Over the weekend of October 15-16, Mrs Simone Brown and a team of excited parent helpers travelled to Melbourne with the 28 students who qualified earlier this year for the national Future Problem Solving finals.

Friday was a huge day for our Global Issues Problem Solving teams. Leaving Wollongong at 4am on Friday, our group enjoyed time in Melbourne, at the Australian Centre for Moving Images and down by the Yarra before checking in to their accommodation at CYC City.

The opening ceremony was held on Friday night at Carey Baptist Grammar School in Kew. Saturday was competition day - how would they fare?

Sunday morning brought with it the awards ceremony and the unveiling of results. Our teams have performed exceptionally well, with three teams qualifying to compete internationally. The full list of results is below.

Junior Division

What a HUGE weekend for our youngest teams! They were amazing! Eighteen Junior Division teams were competing at the national finals, with the top three teams moving on to international competition. Two ICS teams placed in the top ten.

Fifth place!

Congratulations to Dakota Delfs, Huon Clunas, Hannah Williams and Sarah Antony.

Seventh place!

Congratulations to Rosalind Grice, Selena Ren, Jasmine Davies and Sophie Howarth.

Congratulations also to Claire Wang, Lucy Christian, Isabel Carroll and Milly Yuen! This team had a wonderful weekend and competed strongly.

Middle Division (Global Issues Problem Solving)

Twenty eight Middle Division teams competed at the national finals. This is the toughest of the competitions and the largest division. The top four teams receive an invitation to represent Australia at the international Future Problem Solving Finals. We are delighted to announce the following results:

First place!

Congratulations to Cody Sullivan, Jeremy Smark, Melody Brown and Abbey Plaege.

Fourth place!

Congratulations to Madison Healey, Ben Gregory, Connor Larkin and Helena Broeckmann.

Action Plan Presentation

Second place!

Congratulations to Layla Beavan, Jazmine Taylor, Mitchell Atkinson and Toby Atkinson.

The Action Plan Presentation is onsite and does not lead to an international invitation but is nonetheless a fabulous result.

Senior Division (Global Issues Problem Solving)

Twelve Senior Division teams competed at the national finals, and the top three teams have been invited to represent Australia at the international Future Problem Solving Finals.

Third place!

Congratulations to Rosie Finley, Jayda Brain, Abigail Eastment and Ella Story.

Action Plan Presentation

This team also placed first in Australia in the Action Plan Presentation for the Senior Division.

Senior Division (Scenario Writing)

First place!

Congratulations to Jayda Brain who has been awarded Australian champion senior Scenario Writer. Although Jayda has already earned an invitation to the international competition through her place in the Senior Division (GIPS) team, this award will see her compete internationally as well.

What tremendous results! All our students competed admirably and we are very proud of their efforts. All in all, 12 students (two teams from Year 9 and one team from Year 10) have earned invitations to the International Future Problem Solving Finals. This international competition takes place in June 2023 at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, MA.
