Academic, Secondary School

On Tuesday 28th March, Legal Studies students from ICS and Calderwood Christian School travelled to the Downing Centre in Sydney’s CBD to observe first-hand the legal system in action.

Students were given time to talk to His Honour Deputy Chief Magistrate Tsavdaridis who is the second-highest Local Court Magistrate in NSW. His Honour was generous with his time, sharing insights, answering questions and encouraging the students in their legal pursuits. The students then attended a court session presided over by Magistrate Tsavdaridis where they got to see him and his court in action.

They then observed several other Local Court cases covering traffic offences, drug possession, break and enter, and assault.

The students navigated the formal environment of a court room with maturity and respect to all involved.

On the way home, outside the court building the students were intrigued to see a media press pack on the steps. The media had assembled to report on the high profile war crimes case that they had been following in class. The students were not asked to comment, however, would have been prepared had the opportunity presented itself.
