On Friday, October 20, ICS was represented by two teams in the first round of the CSSA State Knockout Cricket Competition at Dalton Park in Fairy Meadow.
It was a very successful day, with the Opens team winning its 40-over clash against Cedars Christian College, and the Under-15 Junior team winning its two T20 matches against Cedars and Mount Annan Christian College. Both games were highlighted by some wonderful performances from our students.
Opens: ICS 7/213 (40) def Cedars 106 all out (21.2)
Batting highlights: Ben C 103*; Radha V 24; Sean D 16
Bowling highlights: Josh H 3/28; Mikaela S 2/14; Cooper R 2/9; Cody S 2/12, Darcy C 1/0
A shaky start early in the batting innings for ICS saw the score at 3/28 and then 4/42. A strong partnership between Radha V and Ben C saw ICS through to drinks with the score at 4/83, with their partnership growing even more as the team built a strong total. As Radha and Ben's 87-run partnership came to an end, Ben batted on, supported by a handy 16 from Sean D as ICS finished on 7/213, with Ben reaching his century in the last over!
Taking to the field to defend their strong total, the Opens took a wicket early, but some strong top-order batting from Cedars threatened to be a challenge. With a strong partnership mounting, Josh H struck twice in the same over as Cedars fell from 2/66 to 5/66 in a short time. The opposition lower order provided some resistance, but a strong team bowling performance, which saw Josh finish with three wickets, and Cody, Cooper and Mikaela all finish with two, helped ICS to bowl Cedars out for 106, winning by 107 runs.
Under-15 Juniors Game 1: ICS 5/113 (20) def Cedars 42 all out (16.2)
Batting highlights: Oliver S 67; Elijah M 20*
Bowling highlights: Orlando M 4/7; Athul R 2/6; Jake B 2/12
Oliver S anchored the ICS batting innings, batting through 18 overs to score a brilliant 67, which at one stage included hitting five fours in a row! He was well-supported by Elijah M, who finished with 20* as ICS added a convincing first-innings total.
Defending their score, the ICS Juniors started well, with Orlando M taking a wicket from his first ball, with Luke J taking a wicket shortly after to continue the team's strong start. Orlando took another wicket in his second over, and two in his third, as ICS claimed the first five wickets for just nine runs. Some handy middle-order contributions for Cedars built the total, but Jake B and Athul R took two wickets apiece to wrap up the lower order and secure a 71-run win for ICS.
Under-15 Juniors Game 2: ICS 7/82 (20) def Mount Annan 28 all out (11.5)
Batting highlights: Samuel S 23; Hamish E 14*; Oliver S 11
Bowling highlights: Elijah M 6/8; Luke J 2/3
ICS batted first again in the second Juniors T20 game, with Samuel S and Jake B putting on a strong 36-run partnership for the first wicket. Oliver S contributed again with 11 runs before being run out, with Mount Annan taking five wickets for just seven runs to restrict ICS to a low score. A handy 22-run partnership from Julius and Hamish, who finished with 14*, saw ICS finish on 7/82 after 20 overs.
In response, ICS started strongly, with Orlando M again taking a wicket in his first over. Luke J continued the strong momentum, taking two wickets in as many balls to start his second over and reduce Mount Annan to 3/6. With the opposition settling, Elijah M took a wicket in his first over and another in his second, before taking three wickets in his third over to claim his fifth wicket for the innings! With Mount Annan's score at 9/28 and ICS needing just one wicket to win, Elijah struck again, to finish with the remarkable figures of 6/8!
Following the strong performances from the Under-15 junior team, coach Mr Joel Manns said:
"The junior boys won both their games in convincing fashion. All the boys played with great skill, excellent sportsmanship and a spirit of encouragement to one another. I look forward to coaching these boys at the next level of this competition."
