Compelled by Love at Easter
Compelled by Love at Easter
At the heart of our school community is a simple yet profound truth drawn from Ephesians 1:3–6 and captured in our 2026 theme, Compelled by Love. It is a truth that speaks into who we are, not just as a school, but as people created and known by God.
There is something deeply meaningful about being chosen. Whether it’s being selected for a team, invited into a friendship, or trusted with responsibility, being chosen reminds us that we matter. Yet, the Bible takes this idea even further. It tells us that before the world was even created, God chose us, not because of anything we have done, but simply because of his love.
For those who are followers of Jesus, this truth becomes deeply personal: in Christ, you are chosen. Not because of your achievements or efforts, but because of God’s gracious purpose and love.
This challenges a common belief many of us carry, that love must be earned. It is easy to think that we are valued only when we succeed, behave well, or meet expectations. However, Scripture reminds us that God’s love comes first. It is not a reward; it is a starting point.
In Ephesians, we are also reminded that we are adopted into God’s family through Jesus. This is a beautiful picture of belonging. We are not distant or disconnected from God, we are welcomed, known, and included. For us at Illawarra Christian School, this shapes how we understand community. We are more than a collection of students, staff and parents; we are a community grounded in the reality that we belong to God and, therefore, to one another.
At Easter, we are reminded that God’s love is not just a plan or an idea, it is something he acted on. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God made a way for us to be forgiven, restored, and brought into his family. The cross shows us the depth of his love, and the empty tomb assures us that this love is victorious and secure. Easter reminds us that being chosen and loved by God comes at great cost and is given to us as a gift of grace.
Our theme, Compelled by Love, flows directly from this truth. To be compelled is not to be forced or pressured, but to be moved from within. God does not call us to earn his love; rather, he invites us to live in response to it. When students and staff understand that they are deeply loved, it changes how they learn, how they relate, and how they respond to challenges.
It also shapes the kind of culture we are seeking to build together. A culture where mistakes are part of growth, not a source of shame. A culture where differences are met with kindness and respect. A culture where grace, undeserved kindness, is not just taught, but lived out in classrooms, playgrounds, and everyday interactions.
As we journey through the rest of 2026, my encouragement to our community is this: if you are a follower of Jesus, hold firmly to the truth that you are chosen, you are loved, and you belong. And from that foundation, may we, as a school community, be truly compelled by love, in our learning, in our relationships, and in the way we reflect God’s grace to one another each day.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in nurturing a community shaped by this shared hope and calling.

A tapestry of cultures
A tapestry of cultures
During the week of March 16-22, our school community celebrated Harmony Week. This was a chance to reflect on the depth and diversity of cultures across our community.
As part of our Harmony Week celebrations, our students and staff contributed to the construction of a woven tapestry, symbolising the many cultures represented at ICS.
While the tapestry is still in progress, the many patterns of fabric that have already been woven remind us of the cultural diversity of our school community – and perhaps its incomplete status reminds us that our school community is always growing!
Hear from some of our students about their cultures and 'harmony' mean to them!

Primary Leaders equipped at CRU FIT
Our Primary Leaders recently attended the CRU FIT (Followers in Training) event at Calderwood Christian School.
The event was attended by over 100 students from five schools, with students sharing what was happening in their schools, praying together, working together and learning about how to read the Bible with others and for themselves.
Some of our leaders' key takeaways from the event included:
- You don't have to be afraid, for the Lord is with you.
- God loves me no matter what.
- You can trust in God.
- God's sword is his word.
- We learnt how to read clearly from the Bible to a group.
- We learnt how to find books in the Bible quickly.

Kembla House raises funds for Miracle School Ministries
Term 1 has been a busy one for our Kembla House Captains, coordinating a fantastic fundraiser for Miracle School Ministries! We are pleased to report that their fundraising efforts generated over $1900 to help provide education to the children of brick kiln labourers in Pakistan.
Futsal House Cup
Alongside our Secondary Captains and House Captains, the Futsal House Cup was a highlight of Term 1 for many of our students!
The group stage games gave many students the opportunity to represent their house in a battle for the esteemed trophy, with the final in Week 7 generating plenty of excitement among staff and students alike.
Alongside the final, our Secondary leaders hosted a bake sale, with the funds contributing to the final total for Miracle School Ministries.

Trivia Fundraiser
At the end of Week 7, students in Years 7-10 participated in a trivia tournament on Friday as part of the fundraiser, with trivia questions centred around Miracle School Ministries and its provision of free education to children of brick kiln labourers in Pakistan.
Well done to our captains for this fantastic initiative! Thank you to everyone across our school community who supported it.
